Gazing up at the towering structure it is hard to believe it took nearly two decades to complete the Atat\u00fcrk Cumhuriyet Kulesi. This is no ordinary tower. It is a symbol of Ankara’s ambition and resilience.

The Atat\u00fcrk Cumhuriyet Kulesi is located in Ankara Turkey. It stands as a testament to modern Turkish architecture. Keçiören Municipality constructed it. The grand opening took place on March 18 2024.

Let’s step back in time to understand the Cumhuriyet Kulesi’s journey. The first tender for the Cumhuriyet Kulesi was held in 2002. Keçiören Municipality initiated it. The foundation was laid on July 18 2003. Gulben Ergen even gave a concert at the ceremony. Back then officials planned to complete the tower by April 2004.

However things did not go as planned. In 2005 the contract with the initial construction firm was terminated. Then in March 2006 Keçiören Municipality announced it would pour the foundation concrete itself.

But the troubles did not end there. In 2008 the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality challenged the Cumhuriyet Kulesi. They claimed it violated zoning plans. In May 2009 the Ankara 10th Administrative Court revoked the tower’s construction permit.

Then in August 2013 the Council of State ordered the demolition of the Cumhuriyet Kulesi. But the people of Keçiören spoke out. A public vote was held in November 2017. Seventy-six percent of participants voted for the tower’s construction to continue.

In 2018 zoning plan amendments were made. A new construction tender took place on April 10 2020. Finally the Atat\u00fcrk Cumhuriyet Kulesi opened on March 18 2024.

Ragıp Buluç was the architect behind this impressive design. The Atat\u00fcrk Cumhuriyet Kulesi stands 197 meters tall. It is a reinforced concrete structure. The tower also features a restaurant and parking for 350 vehicles.
