Five domes rise majestically above us. This is the Karacabey Camii in Ankara. Its beauty is undeniable. Its history even more so.

Built around 1427 it stands as a testament to faith and resilience. This mosque is more than just a place of worship. It’s a historical landmark. It’s a cultural gem. It’s a complex. Within its walls lies the mausoleum of Celaleddin Karacabey. He was a significant figure Sultan Mehmed’s son-in-law. He was also the son of II Murad’s wife. After his death at the Battle of Varna his body was brought back to Ankara. He rests here in peace.

Karacabey Camii is part of a larger complex. It includes a fountain a double bath and even madrasas. Sadly the bath is gone now. The complex once covered a vast area extending towards Hacettepe. Imagine the hustle and bustle of life here centuries ago. The mosque’s architecture is a fascinating blend of stone and brick. Its tile roof speaks of the artistry and skill of its builders.

The Karacabey Camii’s minaret is truly special. It’s made of brick. The base is cut stone. The upper portion is brick. It features double rows of niches. Each face is intricately designed. This is the hallmark of its glazed brick and tile work.

The mosque has undergone many restorations. It survived the 1895 earthquake. Later restoration took place in 1938 and 1943. A major restoration occurred in 2005. During this restoration a surprising fact was discovered. The original design of the Karacabey Camii matched that of the Yahsi Bey Camii in Tire Izmir. The 2005 restoration restored the mosque to its original design. A tower was added to the top of the dome. This feature was missing for years.

The Karacabey Camii is not just a building. It’s a living history lesson. It shows us the enduring power of faith. It showcases the beauty of Turkish craftsmanship. It tells the story of Ankara’s rich past. It continues to enrich the lives of its people and visitors alike.
