In 1971, a unique museum opened its doors within the Central Barracks of Ankara. The Haritacılık Müzesi, or Cartography Museum, began its life as part of the Map Technical High School. This wasn’t just a repository for dusty old maps. The Haritacılık Müzesi aimed to showcase the art and science of mapmaking in Turkey. Seven years later, a painting gallery was added, further enriching the museum’s offerings. A major renovation in 1987 brought even more materials into the collection, boosting its appeal. The Haritacılık Müzesi reopened in 1990 under the administration of the General Directorate of Maps. Its current home, also within the Central Barracks, dates to 1994. Today, the Haritacılık Müzesi is divided into five distinct sections, housing 627 fascinating items. One section honors Lieutenant General Mehmet Şevki Ömer. It displays his military diplomas, family albums, knight insignia, and personal belongings, offering a glimpse into the life of a prominent military figure. The Historical Relief Map section is a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship of mapmakers. Here, you’ll see relief maps painstakingly created by hand using resin or wood. These three-dimensional representations of landscapes bring a tangible element to the art of cartography. The Historical Paper Maps section traces the evolution of modern cartography in Turkey. One notable exhibit is the Sakarya map, famously created in just 20 days during the War of Independence in 1921. This map played a crucial role in the war’s outcome. The Tools Department showcases the technical equipment used in cartography from 1885 to the present day. This section highlights the technological advancements that have shaped mapmaking over the centuries. Finally, the Painting Gallery houses 22 works by military painters. This collection offers a unique artistic perspective on military life and history. The Haritacılık Müzesi is open to visitors Tuesday through Friday, offering a captivating journey through the history of cartography in Turkey.
