Echoes of industry whisper from the Fosse du 9-9bis de la Compagnie des Mines de Dourges. This isn’t just a mine it’s a monument to the heart of French industry. Before you stands a testament to a time when coal fueled the nation. Here the earth yielded its bounty. Men toiled deep below. Their sweat and labor built this landscape.

The Fosse du 9-9bis started its life in 1930. It was one of the last mines opened before nationalization in 1946. Imagine the scene then. New shafts sunk deep into the earth. New towns sprung up around the mine. The Declercq-Crombez pit was a bustling hub. Thousands of miners toiled to extract millions of tons of coal.

After nationalization the Fosse du 9-9bis joined the Oignies Group. It played a vital role supporting the nearby Fosse no 10. It even supplied materials to the Compagnie des mines d’Ostricourt’s Fosse no 2 starting in 1966. It served as a lifeline for other mines. Workers transferred here as other pits closed.

The last coal was raised from the Fosse du 9-9bis on December 21 1990. This marked the end of an era for the Nord-Pas-de-Calais coalfield. The mine closed permanently in June 1991. The shafts were filled. Its legacy however lived on.

Faced with demolition the site was saved. In 1992 parts of the headframe and buildings were listed as historic monuments. Two years later more structures were classified as such. The final accolade came in 2012. The Fosse du 9-9bis along with its terraced housing and slag heap received UNESCO World Heritage status.

Today the Fosse du 9-9bis stands proudly. A symbol of a bygone era. It’s been repurposed. It now hosts the Metaphone a music venue. This demonstrates the transformation of industrial spaces into cultural centers. The past and present intertwine here. The site’s history echoes in the music. It serves as a reminder of the miners’ contributions.
