The imposing structure before you is Fort de Bondues. Also known as Fort Lobau it stands as a silent sentinel. Its red brick walls whisper tales of war and resistance.

Built between 1878 and 1882 Fort de Bondues formed part of Lille’s defensive ring. Strategically positioned near the confluence of the Marque and Deûle rivers it guarded the main road to Belgium. The fort could house 800 men and 40 artillery pieces. It even boasted a armored cupola. But its defenses proved vulnerable. It lacked sufficient protection against modern explosives. High ground near Mouvaux further compromised its effectiveness.

Its history is paradoxical. Initially used for artillery exercises Fort de Bondues became a symbol of occupation. German forces occupied it during both World Wars. During World War II it served as an ammunition depot and a chilling execution site. Between March 1943 and May 1944 68 resistance fighters met their end within its walls. Some were allegedly betrayed as part of Operation Fortitude.

The fort’s fate was sealed in 1944. As the German army retreated they dynamited the fort. Today only about one-third remains. Yet the ruins stand as a poignant testament. They preserve the memory of sacrifice.

In 1962 the fort was demilitarized. The municipality of Bondues acquired it. They began restoration in the 1980s. In 1965 a memorial was erected to honor the 68 executed resistance fighters. A museum opened in 1997. It commemorates the region’s resistance. The museum stands as a tribute to the courageous individuals who fought for freedom. Their stories are kept alive within Fort de Bondues. Their legacy echoes through its ravaged walls. Their sacrifice is a constant reminder of the price of liberty.
