Did you know that General de Gaulle was baptized in this very church? Welcome to the Église Saint-André in Lille a hidden gem nestled in the Vieux-Lille district. This isn’t just any church. It’s a living testament to Lille’s rich history and architectural prowess.

The current Église Saint-André stands on ground that held a church dedicated to Saint Andrew since the 13th century. That original church was near the Saint-André ramparts. Unfortunately it was destroyed in 1784. Damage from Austrian shelling in 1708 hastened its demise. The chapel of the Discalced Carmelites on Rue Royale stepped in. It became the new parish church of Saint-André.

Thomas-Joseph Gombert a talented architect began construction of the Carmelite chapel in 1701. Work continued sporadically over decades. His nephew François-Joseph Gombert also contributed. The building was finally inaugurated in 1758. Later Louis-Marie Cordonnier added the bell tower in 1887 giving the church its iconic profile.

The Église Saint-André is a stunning example of Baroque style. Its limestone facade features superimposed Ionic and Corinthian orders. The brick and stone bell tower culminates in a metal dome. The side walls are brick the roof slate. Inside the church’s three naves boast an impressive collection of artwork. Paintings by Arnould de Vuez Otto Van Veen and Jacques Van Oost the Younger grace the walls. The pulpit carved in 1768 by Jean-Baptiste Danezan is a masterpiece. It’s a small wonder intricately detailed.

The church’s interior is incredibly rich. Some furnishings came from other Lille religious buildings. These were saved during the French Revolution. The intertwined A and S above the main door honor Saint Andrew. Above those letters are the church’s impressive organs. This remarkable church was classified as a Historic Monument in 1949 a testament to its enduring significance.

The Église Saint-André isn’t just a building. It’s a living breathing piece of Lille’s past. A place where history art and faith converge. It’s a place where General de Gaulle and Cardinal Liénart were baptized. It’s a place that whispers stories of resilience and faith. A place you won’t soon forget.
