Behold La Noble Tour a relic of Lille’s medieval past. This sturdy tower stands as the last testament to the city’s formidable fortifications.

La Noble Tour is more than just a tower. It’s a living piece of history. It whispers tales of sieges and battles. It saw the rise and fall of empires. It’s a symbol of Lille’s resilience.

Built between 1402 and 1422 by Jehan Sceutre. It was commissioned by Philip the Bold Duke of Burgundy. This was during the Hundred Years’ War. The tower was originally one of 65 towers. They formed part of Lille’s extensive ramparts. Imagine the sheer scale of this medieval defense system.

La Noble Tour’s three-meter-thick walls withstood countless attacks. They are a marvel of medieval engineering. The tower played a crucial role in defending Lille. It endured even after the siege of 1667. Vauban later repaired it integrating it into his new defense plan.

Later uses included storage. It housed gunpowder in 1803. It even served as wood storage for demolition in 1875. A fire at the Saint-Sauveur Church in 1896 damaged a portion of the tower. The damage resulted in a section of the wall collapsing.

In 1911 it was rented for a mere two francs annually. It was rented to the Nord Historical Commission. The commission had the task of securing its base for preservation.

After World War II La Noble Tour became a memorial. It commemorates the Resistance. General de Gaulle even inaugurated it in 1959. Inside rests an urn holding ashes from death camps. A sculpture by André Bizette-Lindet stands as a tribute to the victims.

So stand before La Noble Tour. Feel the weight of history. Let its stones tell you stories of courage resilience and loss. It is a silent yet powerful witness to Lille’s rich and complex past.
