High above the valley sits Alpe Saroja a place steeped in history. This alpine pasture isn’t just a picturesque spot. It’s a living testament to centuries of human interaction with the mountain landscape.

Alpe Saroja has witnessed much. Its location on the Liechtenstein-Austrian border gave it strategic importance. For centuries it served as a crucial pass. People traversed its trails for trade and travel. Sometimes for escape. Sometimes for war.

Imagine the Walser people. They settled here centuries ago. They built their lives around this unforgiving yet rewarding terrain. Their presence is echoed in the very name Saroja. The earliest mention dates back to 1319 as Soloyen. It marked a boundary in a peace agreement decreed by Duke Leopold of Austria.

Later in 1416 Alpe Saroja became part of the municipality of Frastanz. This happened through a land exchange. The people of Planken secured rights to a passage across Saroja. This was crucial access to their own alpine pasture Garselli.

The Brandis Urbar a document from around 1510 lists Alpe Saroja. It’s part of the County of Vaduz. Even though it was owned by Frastanz. A yearly payment called Vogelmolken was paid from Saroja to the Liechtenstein rulers. This continued until 1858.

During the Swabian War in 1499 the Saroja pass played a crucial role. Legend speaks of Uli Mariss from Schaan leading 2000 Swiss Confederates through this pass. Their flanking maneuver secured a victory at the Battle of Frastanz.

During the Napoleonic Wars of 1799 imperial troops found refuge on Alpe Saroja. They built a 300-meter-long defense line. It’s a forgotten fortification in the northern part of the pass. Saroja has always been a place of importance. This is true for smuggling and escapes throughout history.

Alpe Saroja stands as a silent observer of centuries. It stands as a witness to conflict cooperation and survival. It’s a beautiful reminder of the enduring human spirit against the backdrop of majestic mountains. The views from Alpe Saroja are breathtaking. But remember the stories etched into this very land. This is more than just a mountain pasture. It is a place where history comes alive.
