Imagine standing here, at the foot of Galinakopf, a mountain straddling Austria and Liechtenstein. Have you ever wondered what it feels like to stand on a border, one foot in each country?

Galinakopf stands tall at 2,198 meters. That is over 7,200 feet high. This peak is part of the Rätikon range in the Eastern Alps. The mountain’s name extends to the Galina group. This group is a subgroup of the Rätikon.

Look around. The south side of Galinakopf is covered in grass all the way to the summit cross. The other sides feature rugged rock faces. Galinakopf sends out four distinct ridges. They point north, east, south, and southwest. The jagged north ridge is called Galinagrat. Do not confuse it with the grassy Galinagrätle. It runs northeast after heading east.

Galinakopf dominates its surroundings due to its height. It is a popular mountain for its views. The south flank offers an easy climb.

Interestingly, the Galinakopf lies about five and a half kilometers north of Malbun. Malbun is a Liechtenstein winter sports resort. Nenzing in Vorarlberg is about seven and a half kilometers to the northeast. The mountain slopes to the Wurmtal valley in the west. To the east lies Galinaalpe. The Valorschbach valley is to the southwest.

Neighboring mountains are significantly lower. To the north of Galinagrat, separated by the Zigerbergsattel, are the Hohen Köpfe. Lohnspitz lies northeast.

The standard route to the top leads through the south flank. It is an easy hiking trail. The starting point is at the Gasthaus Mattajoch. The Galinagrat offers climbing opportunities for those seeking a challenge.

Here’s a quirky fact. The volleyball club VBC Galina traditionally hands over jerseys to new players. This happens at sunrise on Galinakopf. Quite a unique team initiation, isn’t it?

So as you stand here, take a moment to appreciate Galinakopf. It is a natural border marker and a beautiful peak. It offers stunning views and a bit of local tradition. It is a mountain that connects two countries and offers a unique experience to those who visit.
