Perhaps you have heard Las Vegas called “The Meadows”. The Spanish name “Las Vegas” means “the meadows”. Once, natural springs supported grasses and mesquite trees. The springs created a meadow ecosystem. The city gets its name from this fertile lowland.
Today, Las Vegas is Nevada’s largest city. It is the county seat of Clark County. In 2020, the city had 641,903 residents. The metropolitan area had over 2,000,000 people. Las Vegas is known as the Entertainment Capital of the World.
The early history of Las Vegas is interesting. Nomadic Paleo-Indians were here 10,000 years ago. They left behind petroglyphs. Ancient Puebloan and Paiute tribes followed. They arrived at least 2,000 years ago.
In 1829, Rafael Rivera was the first non-Native American to see the valley. He was a young Mexican scout. Trader Antonio Armijo led a 60-man party here in 1829. They traveled along the Spanish Trail to Los Angeles. John C. Frémont arrived in 1844. His writings lured pioneers to the area.
Las Vegas was founded as a city in 1905. In 1911, Las Vegas was incorporated. That same year, Las Vegas officially became a city.
The year 1931 was important. Nevada legalized casino gambling then. The state also reduced divorce residency requirements to six weeks. Construction of the Hoover Dam tunnels began. The workers and their families helped Las Vegas during the Great Depression.
Las Vegas Army Airfield was established in late 1941. It was renamed Nellis Air Force Base in 1950. It is home to the United States Air Force Thunderbirds team.
After World War II, Las Vegas became known for lavish hotels. Gambling casinos and big-name entertainment grew. In 1951, nuclear weapons testing began 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas. The city was nicknamed the “Atomic City.” People could see mushroom clouds until 1963.
The Moulin Rouge Hotel opened in 1955. It was the first racially integrated casino-hotel in Las Vegas. During the 1960s, corporations built hotel-casinos. Gambling became “gaming”. It became a legitimate business.
In 1995, the Fremont Street Experience opened. It features millions of LED lights and powerful sound systems.
Las Vegas has tried to revitalize its downtown area. Projects debuted including the Smith Center for the Performing Arts. Also new were the Discovery Children’s Museum and the Mob Museum.
Las Vegas is in a basin on the Mojave Desert floor. It is surrounded by mountains. The landscape is rocky and arid. The city’s elevation is about 2,030 feet.
Las Vegas has a subtropical hot desert climate. Summers are long and extremely hot. Winters are short with mild days. Rainfall is scarce.
The city’s economy is driven by tourism, gaming, and conventions. The Golden Gate Hotel and Casino is the oldest operating hotel and casino. It opened in 1906 as the Hotel Nevada. The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign was installed in 1959. It stands at the south end of the Las Vegas Strip.
Today, Las Vegas continues to evolve. It balances its identity as an entertainment hub with the needs of its growing population. The city strives to create a sustainable and vibrant community.
