Can you imagine a high school so big, it was once the largest in all of Nevada? Right here, before you stands Green Valley High School. It’s not quite as massive as it once was, but its story is filled with remarkable achievements. Green Valley High School first opened its doors in the fall of 1991. It was a significant event, marking the first new high school the Clark County School District had built since 1976. Green Valley High School, nestled in the community of the same name, quickly became a symbol of the area’s booming growth. The school district went from the 15th largest in the nation to the 5th in just 16 years. At its peak, Green Valley High School housed approximately 3,600 students in 1999. Imagine the hallways bustling with that many teenagers! Today, the student population hovers around 2,600. Rezoning efforts shrunk the school’s zone and impacted the student body size. Despite this, the school’s “Commitment to Excellence” has remained constant. This commitment extends beyond academics. Green Valley High School is known for its powerhouse athletics programs. The baseball team clinched an incredible six consecutive state titles from 1993 to 1998, with two more championships in 2001 and 2003. The girls’ golf team also holds a national record. They achieved a staggering 144 straight wins from 1992 to 2004. Green Valley’s reputation for excellence reached national publications. Sports Illustrated recognized it as the best sports high school in Nevada for over a decade. The arts flourish here too. In 2006 and 2008, Green Valley High School became one of a select few high schools chosen to premiere “High School Musical” and its sequel on stage. They also premiered “Camp Rock: The Musical” in 2010. Their 2014 production of “Mary Poppins” was the first high school play showcased at the prestigious Las Vegas Smith Center. The school’s band also boasts an impressive resume. They performed at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, a first for a Nevada band. They’ve graced the stages of Carnegie Hall, and even marched in presidential inauguration parades for both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Green Valley High School truly stands as a testament to achievement in academics, athletics, and the arts.
