Peering through the Mojave yucca and cholla cactus a story unfolds. It’s the story of the Wilson Homestead. This place whispers tales of dreams, perseverance, and the relentless passage of time right here at Red Rock Canyon.

The Wilson Homestead stands as a testament to the pioneering spirit of Horace and Glenda Wilson. They arrived in this area around 1920 from Indiana. They sought a life carved from the rugged Nevada landscape. Imagine their determination. They built a two-story house complete with a fireplace.

Horace Wilson was a mason by trade. The Wilsons filed an 80-acre homestead. They used a shovel to build a road. It was so that they could transport lumber to the site. Glenna Wilson said that every time that they came to town they pulled a drag to level out the road bed.

The Wilsons weren’t just builders. They were cultivators of life. They planted an apple orchard. The garden included sweet potatoes, melons, and strawberries. They even created an outdoor shower concealed by a grape arbor.

Life at the Wilson Homestead wasn’t easy. It was a labor of love sustained by hard work. In 1929, the Wilsons sold the property to Leigh S. J. Hunt. He was a millionaire. Hunt acquired the place from the Wilsons. He used it as a weekend lodge. The Wilsons stayed on as caretakers.

Hunt planned to raise Arabian horses here and entertain visitors. He wanted to eventually be buried at the property. Hunt was convinced Las Vegas would become the resort corridor of the world.

The Wilson Homestead became a place to entertain visiting investors. Hunt had a good deal of confidence in Vegas. He got a lot of his friends to invest. Oldtimers thought he paid outlandish prices for land.

The good times did not last. The depression hit. Hunt lost money. He died in 1933. The Wilsons left the property that same year.

Vandals ravaged the Wilson Homestead. Fire consumed the house. The property passed through several private owners. In the mid-1970s, the Division of State Parks took control.

Today, only remnants of the Wilson Homestead remain. There are steps that lead to a cracked concrete slab. A concrete foundation stands as a silent witness. Despite the ruins, the spirit of the Wilson Homestead endures.

As you stand here amidst the ruins, imagine life in the 1920s. Think about the challenges the Wilsons faced. Consider their dreams. Let the story of the Wilson Homestead remind you of the enduring power of the human spirit. It overcame the odds of the Nevada desert.
