Climb with me to Potosi Mountain a peak southwest of Las Vegas. Also known as Double Up Mountain and Olcott Peak it offers more than just stunning views. Potosi Mountain’s story is etched in tragedy and resilience.

Potosi Mountain rises 8517 feet. That is 2596 meters. It is a prominent landmark in the Spring Mountains. This geological wonder is made of limestone bedrock. It invites exploration.

The Chemehuevi shaman valued Potosi Mountain. They used its giant cave for vision quests in the mid-19th century. Imagine them seeking spiritual guidance in this natural cathedral.

Rumors swirl about Spanish missionaries. They may have sought silver here. Documentation is scarce but the whispers persist. Mormons arrived in 1855. They discovered rich lead and other metal ore. The mine manager named it Potosi. He likely named it after his childhood home in Wisconsin. That Potosi was also a mining town. It was named after Cerro Potosí. That Bolivian mountain was the richest silver mine known.

The Potosi Mining District thrived west of the mountain. Lead and silver fueled its prosperity. This mountain’s resources drew people. It shaped communities.

January 16, 1942 marked a somber day for Potosi Mountain. TWA Flight 3 crashed into its slopes. All 22 passengers perished. Among them was actress Carole Lombard. This tragic event forever marked the mountain’s history.

Today Potosi Mountain serves a different purpose. It hosts a major FM broadcast transmitter site for Las Vegas. Seven full power FM stations broadcast from its summit. One FM translator joins them.

KXTE was the first station to broadcast from Potosi Mountain. It was also the first in the United States to transmit in HD Digital.

An amateur television repeater operates here too with the call sign N7ZEV. Potosi Mountain connects the city in more ways than one.

NOAA’s All Hazards Radio station WNG634 transmits from here as well. It broadcasts on 162.400 MHz. The NWS Office in Las Vegas manages it. Potosi Mountain keeps us informed.

So Potosi Mountain stands as a testament to nature’s beauty. It also serves as a reminder of human endeavor and loss. It is a place of vision quests, mining booms, aviation tragedy, and modern communication. As you gaze upon Potosi Mountain remember its layered past.
