Picture this Las Vegas a sprawling city in the Mojave Desert. Founded in 1905 it remained a small settlement for years. The construction of Hoover Dam in 1928 brought thousands of workers. Downtown Las Vegas boomed. Casinos and speakeasies thrived. Nevada legalized gambling in 1931. Las Vegas quickly surpassed Reno. It became the gambling capital of the world. Southern California workers flocked to Las Vegas. Gambling was illegal in California. Las Vegans enjoyed vacation recreation and entertainment.

In 1941 the luxurious El Rancho Vegas opened. This marked the beginning of the Las Vegas Strip. Benjamin Bugsy Siegel opened the Flamingo Hotel in 1946. This sparked a building boom. Each new hotel and casino tried to outdo the others. This tradition continues today. Organized crime played a significant role. By the 1990s the RICO Act and corporate investment changed the landscape. Organized crime involvement largely ended.

Las Vegas has an arid climate. Summers are hot and dry. July averages 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Low humidity helps. Nighttime temperatures are usually in the 80s Fahrenheit. Winters are much cooler. Daytime highs average around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Nighttime lows are around 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Snow is rare. The surrounding mountains offer winter sports. Spring and fall are pleasant with temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. March April May October and November are ideal visiting months. Summer monsoons bring increased rainfall. Flash flooding can occur.

The Las Vegas Strip is famous worldwide. It is lined with mega casino hotels. These offer lavish decorations and themed environments. You’ll find romance mystery and exotic destinations. The Stratosphere tower marks the northern end. The airport sits at the southern end. The city of Las Vegas only controls the Strip up to Sahara Avenue. Everything south is governed by Clark County. Tourists from Southern California crowd Interstate 15. This road can be dangerous. Expect heavy traffic on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons.

Las Vegas is more than just casinos. There are numerous attractions. The Fremont Street Experience is a pedestrian mall lined with casinos. There are also shopping malls museums and other entertainment venues. The city features museums. These include the Neon Museum and the Mob Museum.
