Gazing skyward, the Winged Figures of the Republic command attention. They stand as silent sentinels at the Hoover Dam. These majestic bronze figures weren’t simply placed here. Their creation and installation are a story in themselves. The Winged Figures of the Republic, sculpted by Oskar J.W. Hansen, are more than just statues. They represent the spirit of American enterprise and the triumph of human ingenuity over nature’s challenges. Towering 30 feet tall, these figures of a man and a woman, wings outstretched, were cast in bronze in 1935. This made them, at the time, the largest single-cast bronzes in the world. The figures’ shells are a mere 5/8-inch thick yet contain over four tons of bronze. Imagine the intense heat of 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit required to melt the bronze and pour it into the massive 492-ton sand molds. The Winged Figures of the Republic stand on a base of polished black diorite. These heavy stones were carefully positioned using a clever method. They were placed on blocks of ice, allowing for minute adjustments as the ice melted, ensuring a perfect level surface. Between the figures rises a 142-foot flagpole, anchored deep into the bedrock. At their feet lies a terrazzo floor, inlaid with a “star map”. This celestial map captures the alignment of the Nevada sky on September 30, 1935, the day President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated Hoover Dam. The star map isn’t just decorative. It’s a time capsule, allowing future generations to pinpoint this exact date. Nearby, a compass framed by the signs of the zodiac adds another layer of symbolism. The Winged Figures of the Republic are a powerful testament to the human spirit. They embody the strength, innovation, and dedication that built Hoover Dam. They remind us that even the most ambitious dreams can take flight.
