Deep within the serene grounds of Eikando Zenrin-ji Temple lies a poignant memorial, the 清和天皇陵/後三条天皇陵 Stele. This unassuming stone marker holds a tale of two emperors, linked by this shared resting place. The 清和天皇陵/後三条天皇陵 Stele marks the misasagi, or tomb, of Emperor Seiwa. He reigned from 858 to 876. Emperor Seiwa, known in his youth as Korehito, ascended the throne at the tender age of nine. His grandfather, Fujiwara no Yoshifusa, held the true reins of power as regent. This marked the beginning of the Fujiwara clan’s dominance in Japanese politics. Years later, after abdicating the throne and becoming a Buddhist priest, Emperor Seiwa passed away at the young age of 30. The misasagi is located within the temple grounds, a place of quiet reflection. The inscription on the 清和天皇陵/後三条天皇陵 Stele clearly identifies it as Seiwa’s tomb. It is known as the Minooyama no Misasagi, a name derived from the location of his tomb.
