The ancient pond A frog jumps in The sound of water. This is Iwama-dera Temple a place steeped in history and legend. It stands proudly nestled near the summit of Mount Iwama. For centuries it has served as a sanctuary of peace and spiritual reflection.

Iwama-dera’s story began in 722. It was founded by the revered monk Taicho. Empress Gensho requested its creation. She had recovered from a serious illness thanks to Taicho’s prayers. The main image a thousand-armed Kannon statue stands as a testament to Taicho’s devotion. It was carved from a single piece of katsura wood. Legend whispers this Kannon travels nightly. It helps suffering souls in hell. Returning at dawn sweat-covered hence its name the Sweating Kannon.

But Iwama-dera holds more than one Kannon statue. Near the parking area stands the Senility Prevention Kannon. Another protects against thunder. The Thunder Prevention Kannon stands as a silent guardian. This is due to the numerous storms that hampered the temple’s original construction. Legend tells us Taicho subdued the thunder god. He became a disciple promising protection from future storms. Even the water source a spring called Raijin Tsume Hori Yusen is said to have been dug by a dragon-shaped thunder god. It is said to grant health and longevity to those who drink from it.

The temple grounds boast a magnificent ginkgo tree. It has stood for over 450 years. Its golden leaves illuminate autumn. Close by lies Bashō-no-ike Pond. The famous haiku poet Matsuo Bashō penned a verse about the pond. Its gentle sounds are now enshrined in this serene spot.

A short climb takes you to Okumiya Shrine. It offers stunning views of Lake Biwa and Otsu City. While technically separate it enhances Iwama-dera’s overall experience. Iwama-dera Temple a place where history faith and nature intertwine. It invites contemplation and leaves visitors with a sense of wonder.
