Can the echoes of hammering and joyful hymns still be heard within these very walls? Right here, where you stand, is the Assemblies of God Church {Central}, a beacon of faith in Kumasi since 1944. Founded by the pioneering missionary, Reverend John Burdette Wiles, the church’s story began not in a grand edifice, but in the humble abode of Dr. Poku. Imagine those early gatherings, the spirit of faith filling a simple home with the word of God. As the congregation grew, so did their need for a larger space. They moved to a rented cinema, now the Evangelical Church of God in Fanti New Town. Yet, their vision soared even higher. In 1949, they acquired this very land from the Asantehene, Nana Osei Agyemang Prempeh II, for a symbolic ground rent of one shilling. Construction of the Assemblies of God Church {Central} began. This wasn’t a project for hired hands alone. Every evening, church members, filled with faith and a shared dream, labored tirelessly, brick by brick, to build their spiritual home. The architectural genius of Reverend Wiles, coupled with the skillful supervision of Reverend Tchie, guided their efforts. The church we see today, sturdy and proud, is a testament to their dedication. On December 11, 1954, the Assemblies of God Church {Central} opened its doors. The air vibrated with the joyous hymns of the 200-strong congregation, their voices a symphony of faith under the newly built roof. The presence of dignitaries like the Asantehene himself marked the significance of this occasion, a beacon of faith had truly been ignited in the heart of Kumasi.
