What if I told you that the seeds of a global religious movement were sown right here long ago? I’m talking about the Asomdwe Baptist Church. This church has a rich history linked to the broader story of the Ghana Baptist Convention.
The Ghana Baptist Convention’s story starts in the early 1900s. It has close ties to the Nigeria Baptist Convention. Nigerian Baptist traders came to Ghana. Ghana was then known as the Gold Coast. They started the First Baptist Church in Kumasi in 1927. Other Baptist churches soon sprung up. These traders established them in places like Cape Coast and Sekondi.
In 1935 these churches united. They formed the Yoruba Baptist Association. They asked the Nigeria Baptist Convention to send missionaries. They wanted the missionaries to start churches for Ghanaians. The Yoruba churches struggled to attract Ghanaians. They used the Yoruba language in services.
The Nigeria Baptist Mission responded. In 1947 they sent Rev and Mrs H R Littleton to Ghana. They were tasked to start Baptist churches for the local people. That same year the Yoruba Baptist Association changed its name. It became the Gold Coast Baptist Conference. This allowed Ghanaian Baptist Churches to join. In 1952 the first indigenous Baptist Church was established. It was in Boamang in the Ashanti Region.
The Gold Coast became Ghana in 1957. This led to another name change. The denomination became the Ghana Baptist Conference. It was still under the Nigerian Baptist Convention. In 1963 the Ghana Conference gained autonomy. A year later in 1964 the name changed again. It became the Ghana Baptist Convention. This is the name we know today.
Since 1963 the Convention has been self-governing. It makes its own decisions. The Ghana Baptist Convention turned 60 years old in 2023. It is a member of many global organizations. These include the Baptist World Alliance and the Christian Council of Ghana.
The Ghana Baptist Convention partners with other Baptist groups. They work together to fulfill their vision. Partners include American Baptist Churches and others from around the world.
Historically the Convention had several boards. These included boards for finance, church development and evangelism. They also had boards for socio-economics and theological education.
The Asomdwe Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith. It shows the growth of Christianity in Ghana. It continues to be a place of worship and community for many. The Asomdwe Baptist Church is part of a living history. It connects local traditions to a global movement.
