Ever wondered how a simple palm structure became this thriving St. Joseph Catholic Church? The story of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kumasi begins with faith and determination.
In the early days, faithful Catholics from Apraman and nearby areas journeyed to Kronkronmase Catholic Church. When that church collapsed, they traveled even further to St. Peter’s Cathedral in Kumasi. This dedication revealed their deep commitment to their faith.
One Wednesday on February 14th, 1962, something happened near the Ridge Police station. This incident spurred the faithful to establish their own church. That day, Mr. James Asabre, Nana Baafi, Mr. John Mensah, Mr. Augustine Agyeman, and Mr. Augustine Mensah Bonsu held their first service. Mr. James Nyame read the Twi Bible. Mr. James Asabre delivered the sermon.
Membership grew with people like Mr. Kofi Nantwi, Mr. Joseph Yaw Opoku, Teacher Appiah, Madam Matilda Takyiwaa, and Paul Appiah joining. Mr. Kofi Nantwi and Mr. James Asabre frequently contacted St. Peter’s Cathedral. Rev. Fr. Leo was assigned to Ampaame. After many requests, Fr. Leo visited the Apraman church.
The church was then a simple palm structure. It is said that Father Leo laughed upon seeing it. He was amazed by their determination to worship God. He blessed the community with Holy Water.
From that moment, St. Joseph Catholic Church’s popularity soared. Even inactive Catholics joined. The first harvest was organized and roofing sheets were purchased. The remaining money was deposited in Barclays Bank.
The church experienced three miracles. The first miracle occurred when a fire spared the church. Troubles that the church faced vanished after the fire.
In 1963, Mr. Domfeh and Mr. Richard led the construction of a proper church building. The second miracle involved a tree. As it was being cut down, a strong wind redirected it. The tree did not crush the church building.
The third miracle involved roofing sheets. Extra sheets appeared even though leaders only bought 72 in 1974. The Catholic Youth Organization thrived. They won a Cantata competition at Sunteaso.
St. Joseph Catholic Church was initially under St. Mary’s Parish, Suntreaso. Later, it moved to St. Paul’s Parish, Amakom. Then, it went to Christ the King Parish, Ahinsan. In 2005, it joined St. Michael’s Parish, Ahodwo.
Apraman church assisted St. Mary’s church, Kaase. Together, they helped establish the Ahodwo church.
In 2005, the diocese entrusted the church to the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate missionaries. They served as an outstation under St. Michael’s Parish, Ahodwo. Rev. Fr. Jesudas Thaliyan was the first Parish Priest. Rev. Fr. Benoj’ is now the Parish Priest.
In 2012, St. Joseph Catholic Church celebrated its 50th anniversary. The church has approximately 240 members. Most members are youths.
