Asokwa is a town in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. It serves as the capital of the Asokwa Municipal District. This municipality is in the central part of the Ashanti Region.
The name “Asokwa” has interesting origins. It is linked to the term “asokwafo.” “Asokwafo” referred to trumpeters in Kumasi. The term combines “Asokwa” and “fo” meaning “the Asokwa people”.
Another theory connects the name to “asokoben.” Asokoben means “elephant horn.” Trumpeters trained nightly using horns made from elephant tusks. These horns may have given the town its name. Rattray and Wilks support this theory.
Asokwa falls under the jurisdiction of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly. It also forms the Asokwa constituency in Ghana’s parliament. In 2018, Asokwa gained municipal district status. Before that, it was a sub-metropolitan district within Kumasi.
The Asokwa Municipal District covers 25.31 square kilometers. The 2021 census recorded a population of 125,642.
