Gazing upon St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, one might sense a quiet strength. This unassuming structure holds within its walls a captivating tale of faith, resilience, and community. St. Joseph’s Catholic Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the people of Onwe-Ejisu. It stands as a beacon of hope, its story woven into the very fabric of this community. The tale of St. Joseph’s Church begins not here, but a few kilometers away in Apraman. Before the church’s cornerstone was laid, the faithful of Apraman journeyed to Kronkonmase for worship. When their church there collapsed, they turned to St. Peter’s Cathedral in Kumasi. The trek to Kumasi was long, but their faith remained strong. However, an incident near Ridge Police Station sparked a realization: Apraman needed its own spiritual home. And so, on February 14, 1962, a small group gathered for their first service. Among them were James Asabre, Nana Baafi (also known as James Nyame), John Mensah, Augustine Agyeman, and Augustine Mensah Bonsu. This humble beginning, beneath a simple palm structure, marked the birth of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Their first visitor was Father Leo from St. Peter’s Cathedral. He was assigned to Ampaame, a nearby village. He reportedly laughed, perhaps amused or inspired, by the sight of the makeshift church resembling Jesus’ crib. He blessed the community with holy water. From then on, the church’s popularity blossomed. A successful harvest allowed them to purchase roofing sheets. They deposited twelve pounds in a Barclays Bank in Kumasi, a significant sum at the time. The church experienced what the faithful consider three miracles. First, a fire swept through the community, sparing the church. Second, a falling tree, meant for the church’s construction, was miraculously redirected by a sudden gust of wind. And third, additional roofing sheets mysteriously appeared, exceeding the 72 pieces purchased in 1974. The church thrived under the leadership of figures like Kofi Nantwi, the first president, and James Asabre, who maintained close ties with St. Peter’s Cathedral. The church’s journey wasn’t without its trials. Disagreements among leaders led to a temporary relocation to the Apraman L/A primary classrooms. Yet, under Domfeh, the second president, and Richard, they began construction of a permanent structure. The vibrant Catholic Youth Organization of that era even won a cantata competition in Sunteaso. Over the years, the church fell under the jurisdiction of various parishes: St. Mary’s in Suntreaso, St. Paul’s in Amakom, Christ the King in Ahinsan, and finally, St. Michael’s in Ahodwo in 2005. St. Joseph’s, in collaboration with St. Mary’s Church in Kaase, played a role in establishing the Ahodwo church. Leaders like Michael Fordjour, Osei Kwabena, Andrews Nimako, Augustine Mensah Bonsu, and Joseph Yaw Opoku provided catechism and instruction to the Ahodwo faithful. Today, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church stands as a symbol of enduring faith, born from humble beginnings and nurtured by a devoted community. It serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, the spirit of faith can flourish.
