What if I told you Jinjang was once known for something other than its bustling streets? Jinjang, a township in Kuala Lumpur, has a history as rich as the flavors you find in its hawker stalls. It is also known as J-Town.

Jinjang’s story began during the Malayan Emergency. The British sought to cut off support to the Malayan Communist Party. They resettled rural Chinese populations into concentrated areas. These were called “New Villages”. Jinjang became the largest of these. It housed around 13,000 people. Jinjang spanned 445 hectares. That is almost twice the size of other New Villages.

But Jinjang’s early years weren’t easy. In the post-independence era, it gained a “fearsome” reputation. Bandit members were present. Even the infamous criminal Botak Chin was said to be active here. Older residents say this reputation stemmed from prejudice. Early inhabitants were mostly working-class.

Interestingly, the name “Jinjang” has a couple of origin stories. One says it comes from a pig. A Chinese merchant brought the pig to Malaya in the 19th century. People believed the pig was auspicious. Another theory suggests it is a mispronunciation of the Chinese word “Zeng Guang”.

Jinjang faced other challenges too. It was prone to dengue fever outbreaks. A major epidemic in 1973 was traced back to Jinjang. It resulted in 969 cases and 54 deaths.

Today, Jinjang has transformed. New developments are sprouting up. It is split into Jinjang Utara and Jinjang Selatan. There were as many as 9,999 lots on both sides when the new village was formed.

Food lovers flock to Jinjang. Many hawker stalls and eateries are here. They were retained from old wooden houses. Hainanese Street Western Food has served breakfast since 1985. Ah Kiat’s Signature Hokkien Mee is another popular spot. Seng Kee Pao offers delicious Fuzhou paos. Their Dai Bao is a best seller.

Getting around Jinjang is easier now. The Jinjang MRT station connects it to the city. It is one of the elevated stations on the Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya Line.

For daily needs, Brem Mall, AEON Metro Prima, and AEON BiG Kepong are nearby. Klinik Kesihatan Jinjang provides healthcare. SMK Jinjang and SJK (C) Jinjang Selatan are among the schools here.

Jinjang is also close to nature. Kepong Metropolitan Lake is a popular spot. People gather here to enjoy the breezy air.

Jinjang has come a long way from its “fearsome” past. It is now a vibrant township with a rich history. From its origins as a New Village to its modern transformation, Jinjang offers a unique glimpse into Kuala Lumpur’s past and present. As you explore Jinjang, remember its journey.
