How about embarking on a journey to discover J18 – Block B? It stands as a testament to Malaysia’s architectural evolution. J18 – Block B is more than just a building. It is a piece of Kuala Lumpur’s history.

Let’s delve into the story of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka. The institution is closely linked to J18 – Block B. Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka consists of three main blocks. These are Balai Budaya, Block A, and Block B. Construction spanned from 1961 to 1968. Blocks A and B primarily served as administrative offices. Balai Budaya housed a gallery and a performance hall.

Block B came into existence in 1968. Blocks A and B once functioned as libraries. They have since been repurposed into office spaces. These blocks also accommodate utility rooms and guest rooms.

Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka stands at the intersection of Jalan Dewan Bahasa Dan Pustaka and Jalan Wisma Putra. Its location places it east-central in Kuala Lumpur. It is surrounded by government commissions and commercial buildings.

The building’s design responds to Kuala Lumpur’s climate. The city experiences two monsoon seasons. These occur from March to April and October to November. Tinted windows limit heat penetration. Block A is particularly affected by natural light. Windows on the back facade of Block A bring natural light into interior spaces.

The architectural layout emphasizes spatial quality and design concept. Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka includes Balai Budaya, Block A, and Block B. The interior features heavy circulation. This is due to numerous vertical pathways.

The geometry of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka follows a pattern. Six identical squares encompass the entire lot. These squares divide the lot into three rows. The first row marks Balai Budaya’s length. The second row comprises Block A and the lobby. The third row constitutes Block B.

An axis of symmetry cuts through Balai Budaya, Block A, and Block B. This symmetry is evident in Balai Budaya. Block A and Block B lack symmetry. This is due to additional forms on their facades.

Pedestrian movement concentrates within the buildings. Six stair pathways and two lifts facilitate movement. Vehicular circulation circles Block A. An underground path accesses the carpark. It is located between Block A and Block B.

Spatial hierarchy divides the building into public, administrative, facilities, and private zones. Public spaces dominate the lowest floor. Administrative sections house main offices. Facilities are located near the top levels. The topmost floor is private. It is accessible only to VIPs and senior officers.

Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka embodies Post-Merdeka Modernism. This style integrates local influences. It seeks to establish a local identity. Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka aimed to reinstate the Malay language. It was to be used in government matters and departments. The building’s cultural hall features patterns resembling Kain Songket. The space evokes the feeling of a Malay kampong house.

The Cultural Hall Auditorium features triangular and rectangular shapes. These form linear designs. They also facilitate ventilation and daylight entry. Concrete louvers, wall panels, and glass windows adorn the facade of Block A. They allow natural light in while controlling its influx.

The older Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka Office features a reinforced concrete hall. It has a 19-feet high ceiling. A glazed mosaic mural wall and a five-story administration block are also present. Lightweight concrete and aluminum framing characterize Menara Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.

Louvers along the facade enable natural air ventilation. A mural designed by Ismail Mustam depicts “The Malayan Way of Life and The National Language”. A spiraling staircase inside creates a sense of grandeur. Concrete carvings and wood carvings enhance the building’s traditional feel.

As you stand before J18 – Block B, remember its connection to Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka. Its design reflects Malaysia’s journey. It is a journey to rediscover its roots. J18 – Block B is a silent witness to history. It stands as a proud symbol of Malaysian identity.
