The Kota Darul Ehsan Arch isn’t just any arch. It’s the biggest arch in Malaysia. The late Sultan of Selangor, Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, commissioned it. He wanted to commemorate the cession of Kuala Lumpur to the federal government on February 1, 1974. Kuala Lumpur became a Federal Territory.

Imagine the Sultan shedding tears. It is rumored that Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah shed tears when he signed away Kuala Lumpur.

The arch represents Selangor’s sacrifice to the federal government. The Kota Darul Ehsan Arch’s construction finished in 1981. The official opening took place on January 3, 1982. Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz of Selangor presided over the event. He directed the construction of the arch as a memorial to commemorate the sacrifices made by the ‘Sultan, government and people of Selangor’.

Notice the architectural style. The Kota Darul Ehsan Arch incorporates Moorish influences. It shares design elements with the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station. Look at the domes on the arch. They resemble those of the railway station.
