“A community for the Mosque, A Mosque for the Community” is the motto of Masjid An-Nur. This reflects its role as a vital hub. Today we will explore this vibrant mosque. It is known for its strong community outreach.

Masjid An-Nur began as a project by the Muslim community of Woodlands. They desired an easily accessible place of worship. Back then Woodlands consisted of kampungs like Kampung Mandai Kechil. The Muslim community had to travel to Sembawang to reach the nearest mosque. To accommodate larger congregations worshippers traveled to the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque in Johor Bahru Malaysia.

Masjid An-Nur is one of six mosques built under Phase 1 of the Mosque Building Fund Programme. It officially opened on April 20 1980. The four-story concrete building featured a pale blue façade. Bold white borders accentuated its geometric form. Its minaret was topped with an onion-shaped dome. It towered above the mosque. It could even be seen from Johor Bahru.

As Woodlands developed Masjid An-Nur became a hub. It served as a place of worship. It also became a social educational and communal center.

Eventually the mosque’s facilities could not support the growing population. An upgrading plan was initiated in the late 1990s. The mosque underwent major upgrades between 2011 and 2013.

Masjid An-Nur was unveiled on May 31 2013. It retained its iconic blue and white color scheme. The colors were reimagined into a modern pattern on panels. The mosque gained more prayer spaces. It now accommodates 4500 congregants.

Accessibility was improved to meet worshippers’ needs. Ramps and lifts were installed. They improved mobility around the mosque. The new stairless main level allowed easy access.

The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore recognized the mosque. It received Distinction Awards in 2008 and 2009. This was for being a Community and Youth-Friendly Mosque. Masjid An-Nur stands as a testament to community spirit. It is a welcoming space for all.
