Opened in 1965 Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport initially known as Subang International Airport quickly became Malaysia’s primary aviation hub. Its impressive 3780-meter runway the longest in Southeast Asia at the time allowed it to handle large long-haul aircraft. This airport replaced the older Sungai Besi Airport. The airport’s unique design featured an innovative floating concrete shell roof and a circular ramp. These features though were later removed during renovations in the 1980s to accommodate increasing passenger numbers. These renovations modernized the airport adding features like aerobridges and walkalators. The airport handled a record 15.8 million passengers in 1997. In 1996 it was renamed Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport. Unfortunately two major fires in the 1990s caused significant damage. The airport faced operational challenges with the increasing air traffic. The opening of Kuala Lumpur International Airport in 1998 led to Subang’s role diminishing. It then focused on regional and domestic flights. A significant transformation began in 2007 with a RM300 million plan to revamp Terminal 3 creating a corporate aviation hub. The addition of MRO services further enhanced the airport’s appeal. Subang Skypark was created rebranding the airport for general and corporate aviation. A rail link to Kuala Lumpur Sentral improved accessibility. A project to transform Subang Skypark into a dynamic aerospace city was proposed. However this was later integrated into the larger Asia Aerospace City development. In 2023 the Subang Airport Regeneration Plan was approved aiming to transform Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport into a major city airport by 2030. Jet operations resumed in July 2024 after a 22-year hiatus. AirAsia Firefly TransNusa Batik Air Malaysia and Scoot started operating flights to regional destinations. The airport’s infrastructure was upgraded to accommodate narrow-body aircraft. Passenger capacity is expected to double to 3 million annually. The airport’s future includes establishing an aerospace ecosystem and a drone testing site.
