Amidst the bustling campus of Universiti Malaya, rises the Dewan Tunku Canselor (DTC). A concrete monolith, it stands as a testament to architectural brutalism and a silent observer of generations of students. Officially opened in 1966 by Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, Malaysia’s first Prime Minister and the University’s first Chancellor, the Dewan Tunku Canselor quickly earned its nickname, “the Great Hall”. Designed by architects Dato’ Kington Loo and Chris Bailey from Boothy, Edwards & Partners (BEP), its raw concrete facade, a hallmark of brutalist architecture, was a bold statement in the 1960s. The Dewan Tunku Canselor was not merely a building; it was a landmark. It hosted convocations, the culmination of years of study for thousands of students. Its stage welcomed renowned performers for concerts and theatrical productions. The hall echoed with intellectual discourse during seminars and conferences. Even semester examinations, a source of anxiety for many, found a home within its imposing walls. The DTC’s great hall could accommodate up to 3,000 people. A stage graced the ground level, while the foyer served as a welcoming entrance. Connected to the hall was an Experimental Theatre, expanding the venue’s artistic potential. This interconnectedness fostered a sense of community, linking performers and audiences, students and lecturers, in a shared space of learning and creativity. Tragically, in 2001, a fire ravaged the Dewan Tunku Canselor. The flames consumed much of the interior, leaving the concrete shell scarred and blackened. However, like the resilient spirit of the university, the DTC was reborn. Restored to its former glory, it continues to serve as a vital hub of the Universiti Malaya. Today, the Dewan Tunku Canselor stands not only as a venue for hire but as a symbol of perseverance. It reminds us that even in the face of adversity, the pursuit of knowledge and the celebration of creativity can endure.
