In 1905, a seed was planted in Singapore. This seed, the King Edward VII College of Medicine, would eventually blossom into the Universiti Malaya we stand before today. Universiti Malaya’s journey is a fascinating tale of growth, division, and rebirth. The university’s roots lie in Singapore as the King Edward VII College of Medicine. It merged with Raffles College in 1949 to officially become the Universiti Malaya. The name “Malaya” reflects the country’s name at the time. The founders envisioned a place where diverse races, religions, and economic backgrounds could come together. They aimed to create a truly Malaysian university. The Universiti Malaya flourished, expanding rapidly in its early years. This growth led to the creation of two autonomous divisions, one in Singapore and the other in Kuala Lumpur, in 1959. A pivotal moment in Universiti Malaya’s history arrived in 1962. Malaysia and Singapore decided to establish separate national universities. The Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur was officially re-established on January 1, 1962. This marked a new chapter for the institution as the sole university in newly independent Malaya. Universiti Malaya boasts a sprawling campus southwest of Kuala Lumpur. It covers an impressive 922 acres. Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, Malaysia’s first prime minister, was installed as the university’s first Chancellor on June 16, 1962. Professor Oppenheim, a world-renowned mathematician, became the first Vice-Chancellor. Universiti Malaya has played a pivotal role in shaping Malaysia’s leadership. Five of Malaysia’s prime ministers have graduated from its esteemed halls. The university’s engineering faculty, established in 1950, began its teaching programs in 1955. This marked a crucial step in providing engineering education to Malaysian students. Today, Universiti Malaya stands as a testament to its rich history. It continues to be a beacon of knowledge and progress in Malaysia and beyond.
