“The way the light dances through those patterns is magical,” a man murmured beside me. He was right. We were standing before the Al Rawda Mosque, a relatively new addition to Amman’s skyline, having been inaugurated in 2011. Don’t let its youth fool you; this mosque is a symphony of light, tradition, and contemporary design. The architect, Uraiqat Architects, had a vision: to create a spiritual space sculpted by light. Notice the perforated walls, a modern take on Seljuq patterns. They aren’t just beautiful; they filter the sunlight, casting intricate shadows that shift throughout the day. In the morning, the eastern facade erupts in a kaleidoscope of light and shadow. As the sun climbs, the light paints patterns on the floor and illuminates the Quranic verses etched onto the walls. At noon, a sliver of sunlight pierces the Karaki stone Mihrab, highlighting the unique patterns of this Jordanian stone. Even at night, the Al Rawda Mosque doesn’t sleep. The interior lights spill outwards through the patterned walls, casting a warm glow that draws the eye and stirs the soul. The Al Rawda Mosque is a testament to the power of light and the enduring beauty of Islamic tradition.
