Fancy climbing the highest Bismarck tower in Baden-Württemberg? That’s exactly what awaits us. This is the Bismarckturm Konstanz. Standing tall at 22.8 meters, the Bismarckturm Konstanz isn’t just a tower. It is a landmark steeped in history.
Erected in 1912, the Bismarckturm Konstanz honors Otto von Bismarck. He was the first Chancellor of Germany. The location on Raiteberg was chosen to make it a visible border monument. This was the southern edge of the German Reich.
The Bismarckturm Konstanz construction became possible through a donation. Gustav Prym, owner of a Stolberg company, provided the funds. Many Konstanz citizens also contributed. Even Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin donated to the Bismarckturm Konstanz.
Georg Wickop designed the Bismarckturm Konstanz. Its construction progressed rapidly in 1911 and 1912. The Bismarckturm Konstanz is made of concrete. Four cylindrical columns flank the entrance. They support a triangular gable with the inscription Bismarck. Originally flame bowls sat on the pedestals in front.
Inside the entrance hall, you will find a bronze bust of Bismarck. Karl Killer from Munich created it. A gold mosaic behind the bust displays a quote from Aeschylus. It says: What should I fear, who is not destined to die. Opposite the bust, a Bismarck coat of arms is mounted.
A special feature is the 5.90-meter-high openwork structure. Sixteen pillars support it. Six fire bowls are located here. A staircase of 106 steps leads to the top. From the fifth floor, a spiral staircase takes you to the observation platform.
Until 1944 or 1945, fires burned here on Bismarck’s birthday. This was April 1st. They also burned on the summer solstice on June 21st. The openings are regular on Sundays between 1 pm and 5 pm.
The Narrengesellschaft Seehasen Konstanz e. V. currently uses the Bismarckturm Konstanz. They use the rooms as a museum. The tower offers stunning views of Lake Constance. The Alps are also visible in the distance.
Take a moment to appreciate the blend of history. Admire the architecture of the Bismarckturm Konstanz. Consider the panoramic vista before us. It is a fitting tribute to Bismarck. It is also a testament to Konstanz’s rich heritage.
