Established in 1992 East Calcutta Girls’ College stands proudly in Lake Town Kolkata. Its story begins not with bricks and mortar but with a dream. A dream nurtured for fourteen years. A dream fueled by the vision of Late Shri Amiya Sen a former Chief Secretary of West Bengal. He secured land adjacent to the Lake Town Government Sponsored School.
This wasn’t just about constructing a building. It was about empowering women. Generous funding from Norway’s Molde a women’s welfare institution and its Indian partner the Lutheran World Service Organisation made the dream a reality. Local businessmen and industrialists also contributed. Mrs Geeti Sen wife of Shri Amiya Sen played a crucial role. She headed the Society for Health Welfare and Education the local agency overseeing the project.
The college opened its doors on September 27 1992. Initially it offered just five subjects. A small group of students teachers and staff filled its halls. But this humble beginning blossomed. Today East Calcutta Girls’ College boasts seventeen departments. Over a thousand students learn and grow within its walls. Sixty teachers and twenty-three staff members guide them. The college offers seventeen undergraduate subjects with honors in thirteen. Postgraduate courses in Geography and Education are also available.
The college is affiliated with West Bengal State University. Until 2008 it was affiliated with Calcutta University. East Calcutta Girls’ College is also recognized by the University Grants Commission. It received a B grade accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council. This demonstrates its commitment to academic excellence.
More than just academics East Calcutta Girls’ College provides a supportive environment. It offers scholarships fee concessions and a book bank. State-of-the-art facilities including well-maintained laboratories and a library with over 13000 books are available.
