Did the name Kolkata ever strike you as peculiar? Let me tell you a secret, right here in front of the Kalighat Kali Temple. “Kali-kshetra,” the sacred ground of Kali, whispers an ancient tale. This very temple, the Kalighat Kali Temple, lent its name to the city we now call Kolkata. The Kalighat Kali Temple stands as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. Legend claims that when Lord Vishnu’s Sudarshan Chakra scattered Sati’s body, her right toe landed here. This temple, in its present form, is relatively young, just over 200 years old. Completed in 1809, the Kalighat Kali Temple was built with the support of the Sabarna Roy Choudhury family, though their patronage is sometimes debated. The temple’s design follows the “ath-chala” style, a hallmark of Bengal architecture. Think gabled roofs, like traditional village huts, atop a four-sided structure. The main temple boasts a truncated dome, with eight faces across its two roofs, gleaming in metallic silver. Intricate terracotta motifs, common in Bengal temples, adorn the borders, depicting Hindu deities and natural elements. In 2024, the Kalighat Kali Temple underwent its first major renovation in the modern era. Funded partly by Mukesh Ambani and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, the restoration preserved the original terracotta art. Hidden motifs of flowers and birds, long obscured by time, were brought to light, enhancing the temple’s beauty. The three spires atop the temple were gilded with 50 kg of gold, a testament to the temple’s spiritual significance. So, as you gaze upon the Kalighat Kali Temple, remember the legend of Kali, the goddess who gave her name to this vibrant city. Remember the architectural heritage, the intricate details, and the sacred energy that pulsates within these walls.
