Did you know that Bidhannagar College started with just 52 students? It’s quite a story how this institution grew from such humble beginnings. Bidhannagar College stands as a beacon of education in Kolkata. It has played a vital role in shaping young minds since its establishment.
Bidhannagar College’s journey began on June 25 1984. The college was first located in a small building at BF-142 Salt Lake City. Dr Subes Chandra Sarkar was the founder principal. Initially, undergraduate courses were offered in Mathematics and Economics. The physics and chemistry departments became functional in 1985.
Humanities subjects like English Bengali history political science and philosophy soon followed. In 2002 Anthropology Botany and Microbiology courses were introduced. By 2004 the college had expanded to offer M.Sc. courses in Zoology and Microbiology. The Department of Education started in 2009.
The original building couldn’t keep up with the college’s rapid growth. Bidhannagar College moved to a larger building at EB 2 Sector 1 Salt Lake City. The new location offered better infrastructure. The college now occupies 7.5 acres. A new six-story building now houses the Department of Geography. It also holds humanities social sciences departments the library and the administrative section.
Bidhannagar College has seen significant changes in affiliation. Initially it was affiliated with Calcutta University. In 2008 the college became affiliated with the West Bengal State University.
Bidhannagar College offers a diverse range of courses. Undergraduate programs include Education English Bengali Political Science History Philosophy Economics Physics Chemistry Mathematics Zoology Statistics Botany Microbiology and Anthropology. Postgraduate courses are available in Botany Anthropology Education Microbiology and Zoology.
The Department of History started with the college in 1984. It has five full-time faculty members. They support the students in their studies. The department arranges parent-teacher meetings. They also organize educational tours. The goal is to motivate students to pursue higher education.
In 2009-2010 Bidhannagar College celebrated its Silver Jubilee. Various programs academic seminars and cultural activities marked the occasion. Noted educationists Amlan Dutta and Samar Bagchi were guest speakers.
Bidhannagar College received financial support from the Department of Science and Technology in 2012. The funds were used to upgrade equipment. A computer laboratory and an e-learning room were set up.
Bidhannagar College also provides financial aid to needy students. Free studentships book grants and charity stipends are available. The college organizes classes for UGC-NET Examination applicants. It also offers a Basic Computer Course through NIELT.
