Interestingly, this site was previously home to the Sans Souci theatre until a fire reduced it to ashes in 1843. The iconic five-story building that houses St. Xavier’s College arose between 1934 and 1940. Its construction was a community effort, funded by donations from the people of Calcutta, assistance from Belgium, and even rental income from the American army during World War II. The college has expanded significantly over the years, boasting over 50 classrooms, audio-visual rooms, computer labs, and specialized laboratories for science and biotechnology. Within its walls, the Goethals Library, located above the College Chapel, safeguards a collection of ancient periodicals, journals, and books, a treasure trove inherited from Archbishop Paul Goethals in 1908.
