Charnock’s legacy lingers at Job Charnock’s Mausoleum. It’s a stark reminder of a man who carved his name into the very foundations of Kolkata. Job Charnock’s Mausoleum stands within the historic St. John’s Churchyard. It marks the final resting place of the man often called the founder of Kolkata. This imposing structure pre-dates the church itself. It stands as a testament to Charnock’s enduring impact on the city. Born in Lancashire, England, in 1630, Charnock embarked on a life of adventure. He arrived in Patna with the East India Company in 1658. He spent 22 years immersed in the local culture, even marrying an Indian woman he saved from sati. They had four children and he named her Maria. After his time in Patna, Charnock moved to Cossimbazar. Then, on August 24, 1690, he arrived at the village of Sutanati on the banks of the Hooghly. This event is considered by many to be the founding of Kolkata. Charnock’s vision and leadership transformed a collection of villages into a thriving metropolis. He died in Kolkata in 1692. He was buried at Job Charnock’s Mausoleum, which was erected a few years later by his son-in-law, Charles Eyre. His three daughters, who also lived and died in Kolkata, are interred with him. The mausoleum is one of the oldest masonry structures in Kolkata. It’s constructed of Charnockite, a type of black stone named after him, brought all the way from Pallavaram near Chennai. Job Charnock’s Mausoleum offers a glimpse into Kolkata’s rich past. It’s a place where history whispers the tales of ambition, controversy, and the birth of a great city.
