Journey back to 1959. Imagine the grand opening of the Birla Industrial & Technological Museum (BITM). Union Minister Prof. Humayun Kabir inaugurates India’s first science museum. Dr. B. C. Roy, Shri B. M. Birla, and Prof. M. S. Thacker stand proudly beside him. The Birla Industrial & Technological Museum began its life not as a museum, but as Birla Park. This grand estate was once home to the Tagore family. Rabindranath Tagore’s daughter, Meera Devi, spent much of her childhood here. In 1919, G.D. Birla acquired the property, transforming it into a hub for prominent figures. Nationalist leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and international figures like Chiang Kai-Shek graced its halls. Dr. B.C. Roy, inspired by the Deutsches Museum in Munich, envisioned a similar institution in India. With G.D. Birla’s generous donation of Birla Park, his vision became a reality. The Birla Industrial & Technological Museum opened its doors with galleries dedicated to iron & steel, copper, petroleum, electricity, nuclear physics, and motive power. Over the years, new galleries emerged, covering communication, mining, popular science, electronics, television, and transport. A mock-up coal mine added another dimension to the museum experience. The Birla Industrial & Technological Museum’s influence extended beyond its walls. Mobile Science Exhibitions brought science to rural Bengal. Science fairs ignited young minds, and teacher training programs empowered educators. The museum’s legacy continued to grow, establishing satellite centers and fostering a passion for science across the nation. Today, the Birla Industrial & Technological Museum stands as a testament to the power of science and technology. From its early galleries showcasing the fundamentals of industry to its modern exhibits exploring biotechnology and fascinating physics, the museum has evolved with the times. Visitors can explore a world in darkness, delve into the intricacies of metals, or marvel at the magic of television. The Birla Industrial & Technological Museum invites you to explore, discover, and be inspired. Step inside and witness science come alive.
