Did the Raj Bhavan always have this majestic air? We stand before the Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Governor of West Bengal. This grand palace, completed in 1803, has witnessed centuries of history unfold. Originally known as Government House, its construction began in 1799 under Lord Wellesley, modeled after the Keddleston Hall in Derbyshire. It cost a staggering Rs. 13 lakhs, a considerable sum in those times. The Raj Bhavan sprawls across 27 acres, with a floor space of about 84,000 square feet. Imagine hosting a breakfast for 700 guests. That’s precisely what happened here in May 1802. It marked the third anniversary of the Battle of Seringapatam where Tipu Sultan met his demise. The Raj Bhavan has housed Viceroys, Lieutenant Governors, and now, Governors. It stands as a silent observer of India’s journey from colonial rule to independence. The building itself holds fascinating stories within its walls. Lord Curzon, a descendant of the family who owned Keddleston Hall, later resided here as Viceroy. He reportedly lauded it as the finest Government House globally. He introduced modern amenities like electricity and the “Bird Cage Lift,” which remarkably still functions today. The Raj Bhavan’s design, a neoclassical structure with Baroque overtones, reflects its rich past. The central core and four radiating wings create a unique layout. Residential suites, including the prestigious Prince of Wales Suite, are nestled on the upper floors. This suite now hosts visiting dignitaries like the President, Vice President, and Prime Minister. The Marble Hall on the ground floor serves as a venue for important meetings. The Throne Room houses not just Wellesley’s throne, but also Tipu Sultan’s. Raj Bhavan truly encapsulates the grandeur of a bygone era. It continues to serve as a symbol of power and heritage in modern India.
