Is it possible for a stadium to embody peace? Here at Amahoro National Stadium I think it does. Officially known as Amahoro National Stadium this multi-purpose stadium is located in the Gasabo district of Kigali. Amahoro means peace in Kinyarwanda.
Amahoro National Stadium is more than just a sports venue. It is a symbol of resilience and unity for the Rwandan people. This stadium has a rich history dating back to its construction by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation. Construction began in March 1984 and was completed in January 1989. However the stadium’s significance transcends sports. During the Rwandan genocide in 1994 Amahoro National Stadium became a sanctuary. It was temporarily a UN Protected Site. The stadium provided refuge to up to 12000 mainly Tutsi refugees. Imagine the scene. Thousands of people seeking safety within these walls. The stadium became a beacon of hope amidst unimaginable horror.
In August 2022 a major renovation project began. SUMMA a Turkiye-based construction company secured a 165 million dollar deal to upgrade the stadium. The renovation increased the seating capacity to 45508. The stadium is now one of the best in Africa and the world. The first match at the expanded Stade Amahoro took place on June 15 2024. APR FC and Rayon Sports faced each other in a friendly match. The official inauguration took place on July 1 2024. Rwandan President Paul Kagame inaugurated the stadium.
