Curious about the Valley of Orchards? That is what Wadi Al-Seer means in Arabic. This district west of Amman holds stories of ancient queens and thriving modern life.

Wadi Al-Seer is one of the twenty-two districts within the Greater Amman Municipality. It is a place where history and modernity intertwine. The name might come from a prehistoric queen named Seer. This area spans 80 square kilometers. It sits at an elevation of 900 to 1000 meters. In 2015, the urban population was around 241830 people.

Imagine this valley descending towards the Jordan River. It offers passage to the Iraq el-Amir ruins. These ruins date back to the Hellenistic period. In 1880, Circassians settled here. The Ottomans had resettled them. They established a village called Wadi Sir. British soldiers during World War I knew it as Ain es Sir. The valley became a landmark during battles in 1918.

Wadi Al-Seer includes ten neighborhoods. These are Al-Rawabi, Swefieh, Jandaweel, Al-Rawnaq, Al-Sahl and Al-Diyar. Also included are Bayader, Al-Sina’a, Al-Kursi and west Umm Uthaina.

Bayader Wadi Al-Seer is a town on Amman’s outskirts. It features Ottoman-era buildings and early 20th-century mosques. About 10 kilometers away, you will find Qasr al-Abd castle ruins and the caves of Iraq al-Amir. The city has a historical courthouse. There is also an old fort. An Ottoman-style neighborhood stands on steep hills. Narrow European streets envelop it. The neighborhood’s name means “the Threshing Floor of the Valley of the Orchards”.

Swefieh is known for entertainment and shopping. It has clubs, bars, hotels, restaurants and malls. Upper middle-income residents mostly live here. Families frequent the malls during the day. Younger people visit at night. Albaraka Mall is known for its glass architecture and cinema.

Wadi Al-Seer has a unique culture that influences Amman. Many North Caucasian and North American people reside here. Sweifieh is the fashion center. The city has historic architecture. You will see the old courthouse and fort. The Ottoman neighborhood sits on steep western hills.

The outer neighborhoods differ culturally. They have a higher percentage of low-income residents. Sweifieh and Abdoun focus on media, fashion, finance and shopping. Film and music studios are located here. Many artists and celebrities live in these areas. Congestion and traffic can be drawbacks.

The climate is similar to Amman. There are variations between districts. Summers are warm. Winters are cold and rainy. Snow falls sometimes. Abdoun Valley is warmer but has similar rainfall. Summers have breezes. In summer, temperatures range from 15 to 30 degrees Celsius. Winter temperatures range from -4 to 6 degrees Celsius. Fog is common in winter. Haze and smog occur in summer.

The valley is indeed a blend of ancient echoes and modern life. From prehistoric settlements to Ottoman villages, Wadi Al-Seer has many layers. This area continues to evolve while holding onto its rich history.
