Ahlstrom-Munksjö

“A chance meeting,” you might say. That’s how the Ahlstrom-Munksjö story begins. Right here in Jönköping, in 1862, two paths crossed. Janne Lundström, a local inventor and industrialist, met Lars Johan Hierta, a powerful financier and publisher. Their collaboration birthed the Munksjö paper mill, nestled beside Lake Munksjön, giving the company its name. Ahlstrom-Munksjö’s roots run deep, entwined with the very fabric of this city. The original mill grew, producing a variety of paper products, from cardboard to toilet paper to specialized electrical insulation paper. Ahlstrom-Munksjö’s innovation fueled Jönköping’s industrial growth. In 1898, the company even built a power station in Huskvarnaån, twelve kilometers from the mill. This power station, a marvel of engineering at the time, supplied power to both the Munksjö paper mill and Ebbes bruk. You can still visit this power station today, a living museum of industrial history. Ahlstrom-Munksjö continued its expansion, even being listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange in 1919. This local mill became a global player. It acquired other companies like Aspa bruk, Fiskeby fabriks AB, and Lagamills AB, employing around 1,000 people by 1931. The Ahlstrom-Munksjö of today is the result of a merger in 2017 between Munksjö and the Finnish company Ahlstrom. This merger created a global powerhouse in fiber-based materials. Although the company is now headquartered in Helsinki, its heart beats here, in Jönköping. Ahlstrom-Munksjö’s story is a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and a deep connection to its origins.
