This building, the Kwong Siew Heritage Gallery, was more than just a museum. It was a living testament to the Chinese community’s journey in Johor Bahru. Established in 1878 by Wong Ah Fook, a prominent figure in Johor Bahru’s history, the Kwong Siew Heritage Gallery was originally the headquarters of the Kwong Siew Clan Association. Wong Ah Fook himself donated these two adjoining double-story shoplots. Inside, a treasure trove awaited. Priceless artifacts whispered stories of early Chinese immigrants. I imagined them arriving in “Sin Sua,” or “New Hill” as they called Johor Bahru in Teo Chew, a new land full of promise. Tools used in their trades, delicate jewelry, vibrant Chinese opera costumes, even opium pipes, painted a picture of their daily lives. The gallery also held personal items belonging to the Wong family, their ancestral photos gazing down at me through the ages. One wall was dominated by a traditional Chinese altar. The scent of burning joss sticks filled the air, carrying me back to a time when this building served as a vital hub for the community. It was a transit point for new arrivals, offering assistance with job placements and even providing a hospital upstairs for the sick. When these pioneers reached the end of their journey, their wakes were held in the adjacent funeral parlor, a poignant reminder of the circle of life. I pictured Wong Ah Fook himself, the carpenter-turned-builder, staring down from his portrait, a testament to the immigrant spirit. He was instrumental in constructing many of Johor Bahru’s iconic landmarks, including the Grand Palace and Istana Zahariah. The gallery also housed remnants of his personal life, like the two hanging glass lamps from his home in Kwangchow. Dr. Cheng Chean Chiang, the current president of the Kwong Siew Wai Kuan, pointed out a stack of large ceramic bowls, or “phoot,” once used to serve food to patients in the upstairs hospital. An ancient incense burner bore an inscription, revealing it was a donation from Wong Ah Fook’s opium company. The gallery wasn’t just a repository of the past; it was a celebration of the present. It honored individuals like Wong Peng Soon, the first Asian to win the All-England badminton title. It recognized Wong Hee Coo, a pioneer of Chinese education in Johor Bahru and co-founder of the renowned Foon Yew School. It also paid tribute to Dato Wong Shee Fun, whose efforts paved the way for Malaysia’s independence.
