“Jesus is Lord” echoes across generations. That simple yet profound statement defines the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa UCCSA. Right here before us stands a testament to faith resilience and social justice.

The UCCSA wasn’t born overnight. Its roots stretch back to 1799. The London Missionary Society LMS began its work then. Missionaries like Dr Theodorus van der Kemp arrived. They established the first Congregational church in Cape Town in 1801. Think of the courage it took to spread Christianity across Southern Africa. The LMS’s influence expanded. David Livingstone and Robert Moffatt became famous names in the region. They worked among the Tswana and Amandbele peoples.

The story doesn’t end there. English and Welsh settlers established their own Congregational congregations after 1820. Missionaries from the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions arrived in 1830 in KwaZulu-Natal. These diverse groups eventually joined forces. In 1967 they formed the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa. That union was a significant milestone. It combined various congregational movements.

The UCCSA’s influence extends beyond its impressive membership of over 1 000 000. The UCCSA stands as a beacon. It champions education and social justice. It has played a key role in the religious landscape of Southern Africa. Its branches reach across South Africa Mozambique Botswana Zimbabwe and Namibia.

The UCCSA actively fought apartheid. This brave stance cost some members. Some white churches left. They disagreed with the UCCSA’s strong anti-apartheid position. The UCCSA’s commitment to social justice is remarkable. The UCCSA also played a role in the Kairos theology movement of the 1980s. Ministers like Bonganjalo Goba Roxanne Jordaan and Steve DeGruchy were involved. The UCCSA embraced the Kairos document. They started a denomination-wide process called the Pastoral Plan for Transformation.

Today the UCCSA continues its vital work. Its legacy extends far beyond its buildings. It is a powerful reminder of faith community and the ongoing fight for justice. This building represents more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to perseverance and hope. Remember the statement “Jesus is Lord”. It’s more than a motto. It’s a way of life that the UCCSA has embodied for over two centuries. The church’s ongoing presence here in Johannesburg serves as a continuing beacon of hope and faith for the community.
