Have you ever considered how a city’s skyline can tell its story? Here, towering above Johannesburg, stands the Hillbrow Tower. A concrete giant whispering tales of changing times. The Hillbrow Tower, once known as the J.G. Strijdom Tower, has dominated the Johannesburg skyline since 1971. It held the title of Africa’s tallest structure for an impressive 50 years. And until 2021 it was Africa’s tallest tower. This impressive structure wasn’t built for aesthetics alone. It was constructed for a practical purpose: communication. South African Posts & Telecommunications, later Telkom, needed a solution to the growing heights of Johannesburg’s buildings. Microwaves, a cutting-edge technology in the 1960s, needed a high vantage point. The Hillbrow Tower, at 269 meters, provided the perfect solution, ensuring clear transmission across the city. The Hillbrow Tower isn’t just a telecommunications hub. It also holds a fascinating history. Once a major tourist attraction, it boasted a revolving restaurant named “Heinrich’s Restaurant” and a disco called “Cloud 9”. Visitors could enjoy panoramic city views from its observation deck, located 197 meters above the ground. Sadly, security concerns led to its closure to the public in 1981. The Hillbrow Tower has witnessed Johannesburg’s transformation over the decades. From the apartheid era to the vibrant, multicultural city it is today. The tower even donned a giant soccer ball for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. A symbol of the city’s pride and participation in the global event. Though no longer accessible to the public, the Hillbrow Tower remains an iconic landmark. A silent observer, connecting Johannesburg to the world through its telecommunications purpose and to its history through the memories it holds.
