“Fancy a midnight adventure?” Imagine that echoing through the Johannesburg Zoo. Johannesburg Zoo is more than just a place to see animals. It is a place with a unique history. Johannesburg Zoo started as part of a farm owned by Hermann Eckstein. He sought minerals but found none. In 1891, he turned the land into a timber plantation. He called it Sachsenwald.

In 1903, Wernher Beit & Co. offered the land to the Johannesburg Town Council. It was for recreational use. The park was named Herman Eckstein Park. It honored the man of the same name. This park became Zoo Lake. It also became the Johannesburg Zoo and the South African National Museum of Military History. The land was transferred in 1904.

Sir Percy Fitzpatrick donated the first animals. These were from his private collection. He continued to find animals for the zoo until 1912. The first enclosures housed two lions and a leopard. By 1915, the zoo expanded. An elephant and rhino house were built. An Asian elephant and a camel were brought in for rides.

A key point is that the Johannesburg Zoo was never segregated during Apartheid. This was due to requirements in the Deed of Gift. In the 1960s, the zoo evolved. Iron cages turned into open enclosures.

Since 2000, the Johannesburg City Council corporatized the zoo. It became the Johannesburg Zoo Company. In 2019, the zoo had 515,623 annual visitors. The Johannesburg Zoo houses about 2,000 animals. These represent 320 species.

The Johannesburg Zoo is known for its breeding programs. It is one of the few places with white lions. The zoo is also the only one in South Africa to breed Siberian tigers successfully. Max the gorilla was one of the zoo’s best-known residents.

The Johannesburg Zoo covers 55 hectares. It opened in 1904. The first animals came from Sir Percy Fitzpatrick. He wrote “Jock of the Bushveld”.

The Johannesburg Zoo is big on conservation. It has breeding programs for Siberian Tigers and African Wild Dogs. The zoo also has breed and release programs. These are for the Cape Vulture and Wattled Crane.

You can even visit the Johannesburg Zoo at night. The zoo hosts night tours. These allow visitors to experience nocturnal creatures. You can also spend the night there. The “Zoo Snooze” package includes a behind-the-scenes tour. It also includes a night tour and bonfire.

The Johannesburg Zoo also has a farm animal conservation project. It includes small and giant breeds. There are also indigenous animals.

The Johannesburg Zoo is a place of constant change. It began as a farm. It evolved into a modern zoo. It plays a vital role in conservation. It offers unique experiences. It connects people with animals. Remember that whether you visit during the day or at night. The Johannesburg Zoo offers a journey into the wild. A journey of conservation. A journey of history.
