Here in Bayit Vegan, stands Kol Yaakov Yeshiva. Kol Yaakov isn’t just a yeshiva. It embodies unity and mutual respect. Rabbi Yehudah Adas founded Kol Yaakov Yeshiva about twenty-five years ago. He envisioned a place where Sephardim and Ashkenazim could learn together. They would respect each other’s traditions. This was an experiment of love.
Bayit Vegan sits on a high mountain. It’s at the edge of the Jerusalem Forest. The majority of residents are Torah-committed Jews. Many are Chareidi. This includes both Ashkenazim and Sephardim. The Sephardic population is growing. Many Sephardic Jews from France are moving here.
At Kol Yaakov, young men study and pray together. They live in the same dormitory. They develop love for their fellow students. This love extends beyond the yeshiva walls.
Once, a friend with a paraplegic disability lived in Bayit Vegan. He often invited people for Shabbos meals. Young men from Kol Yaakov would visit him. They engaged in Torah discussions. They sang beautifully. The highlight was the circle dance. Even in his wheelchair, my friend joined. His face radiated joy.
The ratio between Sephardim and Ashkenazim at Kol Yaakov is about 50/50. Neither group dominates Kol Yaakov Yeshiva. They usually pray together. On Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, they have separate services. This allows them to experience their own community’s High Holiday customs. When they pray together, they use Nusach Sfard. It is a fusion of Ashkenazic and Sephardic liturgy. Chassidim like it.
Kol Yaakov Torah Center in Monsey was founded in 1981. Rabbis Leib Tropper and Avrahom Gershon Tress were the founders. Rabbi Tropper had taught at Shema Yisrael Yeshiva. It split into Aish HaTorah and Ohr Somayach in Jerusalem.
Kol Yaakov in Monsey operates from a “Torah only” philosophy. It opposes secular teaching and culture. The yeshiva offers four programs. They are Introductory, Intermediate, Advanced and Bais Achiezer Rabbinical Training Program.
Many students have searched for guidance elsewhere. They find how Judaism enriches their lives. They discover purpose in their pursuits. Kol Yaakov doesn’t compromise academic excellence. It educates students. It brings them into Torah Judaism. Graduates can study in any mainstream yeshiva.
Kol Yaakov’s rabbinical staff helps students acquire skills in Torah studies. They learn Jewish Law, Talmud and Jewish Philosophy. They receive spiritual guidance. The goal is to actualize their humanity and Torah greatness. Kol Yaakov provides individualized attention.
Kol Yaakov has been accredited since 1984. Some 2,000 students have crossed its doors. The student body is mostly Baal teshuva.
Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetsky visited Kol Yaakov in Bayit Vegan in 1980. He stressed the importance of its unifying spirit. He said that when the Moshiach arrives, he will visit Kol Yaakov. Kol Yaakov Yeshiva is a beacon of unity. It fosters love and respect.
