Established in 1995, Al-Quds University stands as a beacon of knowledge and resilience. It’s the first and only Palestinian university in Jerusalem. Its story begins much earlier, though. In 1984, several local institutions merged, laying the foundation for what would become Al-Quds University. This merger included the College of Hind Al-Husseini for Women, a testament to the university’s commitment to education for all. Al-Quds University isn’t confined to a single location. Its main campus sprawls across 47 acres in Abu Dis, near Jerusalem. Additional campuses thrive in Jerusalem’s Old City, Beit Hanina, and Sheikh Jarrah, as well as in Ramallah and Hebron. This network underscores the university’s dedication to accessibility and community engagement.

Al-Quds University pulsates with academic life. Over 12,000 students pursue undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across fifteen diverse faculties. These faculties span a wide spectrum of disciplines. They offer programs in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, law, arts, humanities, business, economics, science, technology, Islamic studies, and more. Al-Quds University prides itself on its pioneering spirit. It houses Palestine’s first medical school and the first Research Center for Nanotechnology. The Institute of Jerusalem Studies delves into the city’s rich history, offering a master’s program focused on this ancient crossroads. A unique partnership with Bard College of New York has birthed the Al-Quds Bard College for Arts and Sciences. This collaboration blends American and Palestinian academic traditions. The Dual Studies program, supported by the German government, merges academic learning with practical training. This innovative approach sets Al-Quds University apart in the Arab world.

Al-Quds University faces unique challenges due to its location. The Israeli West Bank barrier, erected in 2004, has created obstacles for the university community. Students and staff have endured disruptions and even attacks. The university has also been engaged in legal and political struggles to secure its continued operation. Despite these adversities, Al-Quds University remains steadfast in its mission. It champions access to education, fosters equality and diversity, and promotes professionalism and peace. The university’s financial aid program, the largest among Palestinian universities, ensures that financial constraints don’t hinder students’ pursuit of knowledge. More than half of the student body benefits from this vital support. Al-Quds University’s library offers a wealth of resources. It houses nearly 100,000 catalogued books, manuscripts, films, and electronic materials in both English and Arabic. The university also collaborates with numerous international universities and institutes, enriching its academic landscape. Al-Quds University is more than just an institution of higher learning. It represents resilience, determination, and a commitment to education amidst complex circumstances. It stands as a testament to the power of knowledge and the enduring pursuit of a brighter future.
