“This is the house of Mary mother of John called Mark” These words etched in stone whisper secrets from centuries past. Welcome to St Mark’s Monastery a place where history breathes.

St Mark’s Monastery stands in Jerusalem’s Armenian Quarter. It’s more than just a monastery it’s a living testament to faith perseverance and a remarkable history. Syriac Orthodox Christians believe this site holds immense significance. Tradition says it was Mary mother of Mark’s house. It’s also believed to be the site of the Last Supper. Some believe the apostles hid here after Jesus’ crucifixion. They also believe Jesus appeared to his apostles here after his resurrection. This is a claim that differs from other Christian traditions. They believe these events happened at the nearby Cenacle on Mount Zion. Regardless of the differing beliefs one thing remains clear St Mark’s Monastery holds a powerful place in Christian history.

An inscription discovered in 1940 supports the monastery’s claims. This inscription from the 5th or 6th century speaks of Mary’s house. It details how the apostles proclaimed it a church after Jesus’ ascension. The inscription mentions its rebuilding in 73 AD after the destruction of Jerusalem by Titus. This isn’t just a simple structure. It’s a place layered with history faith and enduring belief.

The monastery’s story extends beyond this ancient inscription. The current building dates back to the Crusader period. The Syriac Orthodox patriarch acquired it from the Coptic Orthodox Church around 1471/1472. This purchase marked a significant point in the monastery’s history. It coincided with a surge in pilgrimages from Tur Abdin the Syriac Orthodox heartland. Many renovations have been undertaken throughout the centuries each adding to its enduring legacy. From the early renovations in the 18th century by bishops like Gregorios Shem’un and ‘Abdel Ahad Ben Fenah to later restorations in the 19th and 20th centuries St Mark’s Monastery has stood firm through time and conflict.

Beyond its physical structure St Mark’s Monastery is home to a rich collection of manuscripts. These invaluable texts shed light on the history and evolution of Syriac Orthodox Christianity. Sadly many manuscripts had to be moved for safety. This was during times of conflict particularly the aftermath of the Sayfo and the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Some even traveled as far as the USA.

St Mark’s Monastery isn’t just a building. It’s a living chronicle a spiritual sanctuary and a testament to the enduring faith of a community. It’s a place where layers of history intersect a place of profound significance. Step inside and feel the weight of centuries the whispers of prayer and the powerful legacy of faith.
