What whispers of history echo through the walls of Seoheulpo Pansion? Seoheulpo Pansion rests in Seogwipo, a city steeped in tales of ancient kingdoms and resilient islanders. Seogwipo’s story begins long before the comforts of a modern pansion. This area was once part of the ancient kingdom of Tamna. Tamna thrived on trade with Korea and China during the Three Kingdoms period. The small port of Seogwipo, now a bustling city encompassing Seoheulpo Pansion, sent tributes to the distant Yuan kingdom of China. Tamna briefly tasted independence after Silla’s fall in 935, but Goryeo’s power proved too strong. The kingdom was subjugated in 938 and formally annexed in 1105. Centuries later, the Joseon Dynasty solidified central control in 1404. Three fortresses stood guard in the Seogwipo region. These were silent witnesses to the changing tides of power. Fast forward to the 20th century, and Seogwipo faced the harsh realities of Japanese colonial rule. It became a hub for marine products, with a whale processing plant near the port. The scars of this era remain. Twelve artificial caves carved by the Japanese army haunt the coastline near Sammaebong Peak. Seogwipo endured further hardship during the 1948 Jeju uprising and the Korean War. The port overflowed with refugees seeking safety. From these turbulent times, a new Seogwipo emerged. Mandarin oranges, introduced in 1911, became a symbol of the island’s resilience and economic revival. They transformed from a rare delicacy to a winter staple across South Korea. Seogwipo’s administrative status also evolved. It grew from a small village within Jeju-gun to an independent city. In 2006, it expanded to encompass the entire southern half of Jeju Island. Seoheulpo Pansion stands amidst this rich tapestry of history. It offers a place of rest and relaxation. It also provides a connection to Seogwipo’s enduring spirit.
