Gazing at the unique architecture of Jeju Jungang Middle School, one might wonder about its past. This building, originally the Jeju National University’s College of Agriculture and Fisheries Main Building, has a fascinating history. Jeju National University decided to relocate its College of Agriculture to Seogwipo City in 1964. The Fisheries Department building was constructed on the southern site of the College of Agriculture in 1971. This three-story structure served as a university campus until the university fully moved to Jeju City. Jeju Jungang Middle School, then Seogwipo Central Girls’ Middle School, took over the building in May 1981. Designed by Kim Joong-Up, a pioneering Korean architect, the building boasts a distinctive design. Each side presents a different architectural face. The western side is notable for its louvers, creating an interplay of light and shadow. The south side features a prominent central entrance and varied window sizes. Later additions include the Jiseonggwan gymnasium and Magnolia Library. While access inside is restricted, admiring the exterior offers a glimpse into its rich history.
